Alternatives to Facebook

What I used to hate about Facebook was that, rather than helping you find your friends and connect with them through email or phone, it wanted you to use Facebook messenger. At least the place was entertaining enough to check in and share. Every day now it feels more like a ghost town populated with “content” from strangers for the sake of grabbing your attention. There’s little connection left.

Facebook was built as a trap from Day One. Here’s what you do: when you get the urge to check Facebook, think about a friend you want to connect with, and do that. You may have to send them a message on Facebook asking for their number or their email. Set up a time to get together for coffee or chat on the phone or do a Zoom or whatever it is you enjoy doing together. This is how folks used to socialize, and while it takes more effort than posting on a web site, it is a lot more rewarding.

If you’re going to visit Facebook, have a mission in mind. Connect with a friend? Do that. Cheap entertainment? I have lately found Reddit a better place to waste some time. Delete the app from your device: this will reduce temptation (you can still check the mobile site in a web browser) but will also save you from distracting push notifications.

Alternatives to Threads

Users were fleeing Twitter because it was run by a horrible billionaire, so Meta created Threads for users to access an alternative to X run by a different horrible billionaire.

Bluesky is the same thing as threads, but you don’t picture Mark Zuckerberg sucking up to Donald Trump when you load it up. If you’re looking for go deep into independent social media, try Mastodon. Be warned: the decentralized nature of Mastodon introduces a little learning curve and makes it trickier to share links.
